Do you lack self-esteem?
Do you get anxious around new people?
Are you not happy with your life?
If your answers to all those questions is yes. Then you, my friend, need to do some hard things to yourself. You know why? Because people who do not do hard things to themselves are losers. And nobody likes losers. Losers have no friends and they die horrible, lonely deaths. Often commit suicide.
Hey, relax, don’t take that seriously, its just a joke. Nobody wants you to be a masochist. And you are not a loser if you have problems. You are just like anyone else on this planet. People have problems and to rise above them is what life is all about.
Now about doing hard things to yourself. The saying does have some relevance when it comes to self-development. You know how a piece of iron is heated and hammered on the anvil. How its cooled, then heated and hammered on again.
That’s how the lump of Iron is transformed into a sword. A sword that cuts through every problem that comes before it. In order to be a sword, the piece of iron had to let hard things be done to it.
Similarly, you also need do certain hard things to yourself, so that you transform into your own magnum opus.
Here are 10 hard things you should start doing to yourself:
Be an early Bird
The first hard thing you should do to yourself is to wake up early in the mornings, preferably at dawn. This time of the mornings can be used to practice meditation or to mindfully breath in the fresh air.
The quietude and tranquillity of this time is bound to have a calming effect on your mind. A state of mind that should help you sail smoothly through the rest of the day.
Work out Regularly
With regular workouts you can start getting your body in shape and get your endorphins running. Working out is not a very hard thing to do. But working out regularly without a miss, is hard.
So, doing it will give you a sense of accomplishment and render you with a feeling of confidence. This confidence will help you demolish your social anxiety and make you happier in life.
Break bad habits
One of the hardest things to do to yourself is to break your bad habits. Activities that have been obsessively pursued by you have seeped into your subconscious and eventually turned into habits. A number of bad ones might be smoking, texting too much, swearing, eating more that needed, so on and so forth.
To break a habit, one needs to practice being constantly aware on his thoughts, backed by enormous will power. So, if you can do it, the rewards are hugely satisfying. You’d become more confident, happy and feel a lot lighter, in the process.
Question your beliefs
By far the hardest thing to do is to question your own world views. Man, as he grows up, tends to become attached to his opinions, traditions, beliefs and views (read the article on factfulness). His views and opinions might not mean very much to the rest of the world. But to him they gradually become as precious as his own life.
So, to question one’s own views, after accepting that they might be wrong, is very tough. If someone chooses to do so, he becomes more humble and polite in the process. And he learns to respect others, their views and finds harmony in social situations.
It’s extremely hard to do. So, doing this might take persistent effort on your part.
Take a vow of silence
In a time where there’s too much talk and noise, its hard to remain silent. And the hardness of remaining silent is the exact reason why it is so transformative. So, you can start off by taking a vow of silence for a day, every week.
Doing this will let you be in touch with the constant chatter in your mind. And listening to the chatter of the mind will show you how restless it is. This would eventually make you realise the importance of having a calm and disciplined mind.
Develop a meditation regime
If you realise that a talkative and restless mind is all that is stopping you from achieving your goals. Then you’d take the necessary steps to do the next hard thing to yourself. Practicing to Meditate. You’d fix a certain time and place for your meditation seatings and stick to it.
Doing this, over a period of time, you’d be able to gain complete control over your mind. A control that is absolutely necessary to do the hardest thing on the list i.e. “questioning your beliefs”.
Observe a water fast
To drink only water and not eat anything for a day or two is hard. And that is what water fasting is all about. Fasting is beneficial to the body in various ways. It also should help you develop your will power and control your hunger pangs. Fasting is generally a recommended practice for regular meditators.
Be kind to yourself
If you have anxiety and other problems, remember to stay away the general tendency of self-loathing.
Blaming yourself for all your problems is easy. But to be kind to yourself is hard. It needs practice. Since, we often tend to treat others the same way we treat ourselves. It is only logical that, this practice of self-love, should render you with a forgiving and pleasant personality. Such a personality will make everyone feel happy, when around you.
Learn to let go
To let go, is also one of the hardest things to do. One goes through many experiences in life. Often in his thoughts, he analyses the memories of some pleasurable experiences he had in the past. Through that analysis he draws projections about the future. A future that he would love to be a part of. But as and when things do not happen according his projections, he goes into depression and anxiety.
Therefore, to live a sensible life, you should learn to let go of the schemes and memories in your mind. This is can achieved through the practice of mindfulness.
Yes, you read that right. Being “YOU” is one the hardest things to do to yourself. When you live a life where you do not seek validation from others. When you do your own things and accept yourself for who you are. And also try to improve yourself at the same time.
When you realise that the only person you need to compete against is you, yourself. And you relentlessly strive on to be the best version of yourself. That’s when you start becoming an inspiration to the thousand others in the vicinity. And that is something that’s very hard to do. But not impossible.
Thus, by following the list and putting yourself to the test of the times and situations. You can forge yourself into the most magnificent creature of your imagination. Don’t just be a lump of iron, my friend. Be a sword. Cut like a sword. Leave an impression like a sword.!!
