There’s a saying that, “how you treat others tells much about how well you must be treating yourself”. People generally take care of the things of value.
Value is found in persons and things that enrich one’s being. So, if one values himself, he would automatically understand the importance of maintaining his mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
Such a person is a happy person. And it’s usually unheard of a happy person, being mean and disrespectful to others.
Thus, to have a happy community, each member needs to be happy. And if you are a member yourself, why not start by valuing yourself first.
It should be noted that whenever a person does mean things to somebody, he cannot do so unless he has disrupted his own emotional and mental stability, first.
Acts such as these indicate a lack of a self-value in him.
If you are such a person, here are five ways to start to value yourself:
PRACTICING FORGIVENESS: Mend strained relationships
If you are an average person, it can’t be that you’ve never been in a fight with a friend. And after the fight it can’t be that you’ve not felt bad.
At home when you ponder about all the good times you’ve had with the friend, more often than not you secretly want to be friends with him again.
And so, after a while, you call to apologize, and then he forgives you. Or maybe he calls you first and you forgive him.
Doesn’t it feel lighter after the apology? Doesn’t it feel like a weight has been lifted off your chest?
That’s what forgiveness does. When a person forgives or apologizes to someone, he actually apologizes or grants forgiveness to himself, first.
He forgives himself for having started the fire of wrath and anger in his being. A fire which makes him miserable.
A fire which often spills over to everyone in the vicinity and makes them miserable. Only a person with a lack of self-value can set himself on fire.
Therefore, forgiveness helps regain the value of the self.
PRACTICING THE ARTS: Have a means of self-expression
Have you ever, when sad, or depressed, written a poem, or sketched a beautiful scenery. How did it feel after? It felt relieving, didn’t it? That’s what Art does.
The Arts, may it be visual, performing or martial, essentially provides you with a method to truly express yourself. Expressions, that many a times cannot be let out through conversations.
True self-expression stabilizes your emotions and brings you back to the centre. The centre, of your being, that is calm, tranquil, much like the eye of a storm.
Only here the storm represents the raging mass of emotions and thoughts.
After expressing oneself truly, from the soul, not for validation, not for commercial gains, but truly; one feels more grounded, valued and satisfies by the self.
FIXING LIFE’S PURPOSE: Having a reason to live
Most super successful people say they love their jobs. They say, they never have to work a single day in their lives, because of how much they love, what they do.
Now, you might go off thinking that “successful” here means, only monetarily successful. No, here, successful means, how satisfied one is with life.
A person who has a purpose in life works to fulfil it. Working on such a condition becomes worthwhile and meaningful.
When one senses the meaning in his work, it ceases to be work, but a source of joy. A person without a purpose in life is like a ship without a sail.
Successful completion of meaningful tasks lifts one in his own eyes. Give him self-value and confidence.
BEING A BETTER MAN: Eliminating bad habits.
Setting a goal in life and achieving it, increases confidence and self-worth. But the hardest goals are those which involve self-transformation.
When one decides to quit smoking, or to manage his anger, or to not be lazy, he sets himself a goal, not many are able to achieve.
Imagine the amount of confidence and self-worth a person gains if he achieves in changing his own self for the better. Its huge!!
Such an increase in confidence and self-worth directly work at increasing the self-value in the person.
KEEPING FIT: Eating healthy and working out
And a happy person is not disturbed by negative emotions in his daily functioning. Thus, rendering him full of confidence and charisma.
Keeping fit requires regular exercise and healthy food habits. Doing all that requires disciple and effort.
When an unhealthy person puts the required effort and disciple and achieves the health he desires, he gets to know a side of himself he never knew before.
He gets to know a side which is earnest, resolute and strong.
This self-discovery helps him realise his own value even more.
Have a nice day!!
