Great writers have the ability to convey complex emotions in understandable ways. This is made possible by their superior ability to visualize complex emotions or concepts. That means, they can give form to a relatively abstract concept by wrapping it within characters or stories.
Apart from their ability to visualize, they also usually have a large vocabulary at their disposal. As a result, they describe what they visualize in words that suit the temperament of their respective readers.
Now, in order to get to the stage of choosing the emotions or opinions to be conveyed, they need inspiration. This is the part where the writers have to slog it out. Because, useful inspiration is something that is hard to come by, and unpredictable too. It is somewhat like a solar eclipse.
It happens only when certain conditions are met. Like the alignment of a creative state of mind, to the perfect situation. Such alignments are a rarity in writers’ lives. In order to create such conditions more often, where desired inspiration can strike, great writers do certain things every day. So….
Here are 8 things great writers do every day:
Keep up to date
Great writers make it a point to keep up with the trends of the present times. They regularly look up social media and the news to pick up on the latest lingos. And also, to sense the general spirit regarding the period of time. They do so, in order to know their potential readers, better. That way they can write, keeping in mind their readers’ sensibilities.
Great writers set aside a certain timeslot in their days. In which they make it a point to read whatever they can get their hands on. They do this in order to enrich their vocabulary and/or to look for inspiration.
Many a times, a writer’s mood might collide with the most conducive reading material. Such collisions are the ones out of which inspirations are born.
Keep an open eye
Great writers often walk on a thin line. A line that divides the world of imaginations, from the present moment. In this context, to keep an open eye means that, the writers are often aware of both. They tend to be aware of everything around them at that moment, and subsequently know its effects on their imagination. Whenever they see something that riles up their creativity, an idea emerges. Such ideas are often written down and stored, to be worked on later.
A writer spends a significant duration of time in a day, philosophizing. By doing so he aims to systematize his thought processes regarding specific ideas.
But results, that appear after much deliberation are often further philosophized on again. This goes on until the writer is either satisfied with an outcome. Or he gets frustrated and decides to do something else.
Either way this exercise proves useful in sharpening the thinking process of a writer.
Maintain a dream journal
Many writers understand that dreams too, can be a source of inspiration. So, they maintain a dream journal, where they document their dreams, every day.
This is the thing that writers spend most of their times doing. Writing. They open their notepads containing ideas and inspirations and start elaborating on them. And so, drafts are written, often in the hundreds, out of which the writer selects the best ones. Which are then tweaked to perfection, before being published as engaging pieces of writing.
Great writers make it a point to go meet some friends every day or to socialize over some mild drinking. Socializing gives them an opportunity to talk about various topics and have intellectually stimulating conversations. All of which helps in breaking the monotony of the day and also to think up new materials to write upon. Socializing also usually helps a writer get over writer’s block.
Workout and/or Meditate
For a healthy mind and body, writers either work out or meditate or do both, regularly. Doing this helps them maintain the clarity and freshness of their minds. Consequently keeping them away from writer’s block.
Have a nice day!!
